The Silent Hill Mental Health QR Code.
Nov. 18th, 2025 03:23 pmCashier: Oh, great choice.
Riona: Thank you! I went insane about the original when I was sixteen.
Cashier: Me too. But I wasn't sixteen; I was, er, eleven.
Riona: Wow, that is not the right age to go insane about Silent Hill 2.
I'm a little over an hour in! I can already tell I'm going to regret this, but in an 'I'm so bad with horror' way rather than a 'why did they remake this?' one; the remake itself seems pretty great so far. It's clear that it was made by people who love the original, which makes such a big difference.
Playing through the opening was an absolutely insane experience. I know that sequence so well, and suddenly it had been completely transformed while still feeling like the same place. Seeing that familiar car park in modern graphics! The long walk down to Silent Hill! So pretty and unsettling!
Regrettably, I thought it was cute when James was leaning on the barrier at the start of the game. There's no hope for me at all. I'm so much fonder of James Sunderland than I should be.
(Although not quite as fond as half of Tumblr, which, it turns out, is startlingly horny for remake James.)
The first thing I did, when I gained control of James, was turn around and try to leave Silent Hill. Unsurprisingly, James did not allow me to do this, but I was delighted when I got a trophy for the attempt.
I was concerned that the remake's voice acting might feel too good, but so far it's working for me! They've taken the interesting and clever approach of hiring people who can act, but directing them extremely weirdly, with a lot of strange awkward pauses. Even if the voices and the line delivery aren't the same as the original game, the dialogue has the same feel to it. The creators of the remake evidently understand how the limitations of the original, like its restricted visibility and bizarre voice acting, ultimately contributed to the atmosphere.
After James and Angela's first meeting, I spoke to Angela a couple of times to see if she had any more dialogue, but I felt very bad about it. Angela's a severely traumatised young woman with no capacity for trust, and an unknown man lingering to talk to her a little too long is probably going to make her uncomfortable!
I like how violent and frantic James's fighting feels. No finesse to it; he's just desperate and terrified. You can just keep stamping and stamping on the enemies once you've knocked them down; he doesn't know when it's safe to stop!
Every blow feels like it has a real weight to it, both the ones James lands on enemies and the ones they land on you. I very much feel in danger from even the most basic enemies, despite playing on easy mode. It's stressful!
I initially thought I'd be fine with the stresses of this game after my experience with Little Hope, the most stressful game I have ever played. In a Silent Hill game, if you get the character you're playing killed, at least you can just reload and try again; Supermassive games are considerably more stressful because character deaths can't be undone!
But I'd failed to consider the stress of Silent Hill 2's ending system. My actions during the game determine how this story ends! I'm trying to keep James in good health, because that's one of the details that impact the ending, but how can I look after him when I'm bad at the combat and I keep burning through my very limited healing items?
I'll try my best. Come on, James; we can get through this together.

Nov. 17th, 2025 06:56 pmVTM was amazing yesterday. We got some good angst brewing in our group of characters, which of course has got me rubbing my hands together gleefully. (Even if my character did shoot her shot and ate absolute shit for it.)
As for today, it started off pretty weak with me feeling absolutely exhausted. Probably from adapting to new meds, I assume. Woke up, had breakfast, passed out for a few more hours. Not ideal, but at the very least I did manage to get a good bit of writing work done! It was just summarizing future book ideas, but that's also very important. Here's hoping tomorrow is better. I'd like to get a bit more work done, not just with writing, but art and study too.
We're gonna go see Angel's Egg in theaters this week, so I'm really excited for that! It's such a good movie, and it'll be awesome to see it in a theater. We're also gonna have a dinner date and maybe stop at a store or two, so that'll be fun!
Anyway, now I need to decide if I wanna spend the evening playing more Genesis games on my Vita, or maybe hop on OSRS, hmm.

Nov. 17th, 2025 11:27 ambetween twice-a-year major surgeries pretty much ever year and my skeletal system being a Fuck, in hindsight i had chronic pretty severe inflammation without realizing it. i don't blame anyone/regret anything, mind you; we were operating with the best knowledge we had back then; it's easy to forget how utterly devoid of information resources even the 90's was, you couldn't just randomly go on scihub and yoink/read an academic article on your [random medical situation] and try things out.
it's funny, i've gotten actually so good about minding which ingredients kickstarts inflammation; for some reason my usual dunkin' doughnuts bulk coffee doesn't do it, but a lot of boutique coffee brands do which is slightly awkward when people give them as gifts knowing you're the coffee fanatic. XD
it tastes great! love the variety! but maybe not so great when your baseline pain level suddenly shoots up from a 2->5/6 and you're like 'huh what changed..... oh it's the coffee again isn't it, aw damn.' lol.
anyway, mentioning it here in case if it connects any dots for anyone else.
I Am On Vacation
Nov. 16th, 2025 11:13 pmWhile helping with some errands, I got to visit an Aldi's for the first time. Prices are good and everything I bought has been fine. The main thing they have against them is that they open at 9AM. I suppose if I calibrate lists properly, I can make a quick trip in during the week when I'm out for other reasons. (I also want to go to the fancier grocery this week! But I also want to finally get to the Lebanese restaurant in the same plaza so that will be closer to a lunch-time trip. Maybe Wednesday.)
I am in the planning discord for a new online BL convention. The project came from a conversation on reddit about how a lot of virtual conventions are centered on daytime North America and aren't as accessible for Asian/Oceanian/European fans. (I had mentioned that I'm in NA but not on NA daytime hours, so different boat same river, or something? Anyway, if anyone would like an invite to the planning discord, LMK.)
I've mostly finished up Blade King, a SNAA model kit. He was certainly an adventure and while he certainly isn't perfect, I'm pleased with how he turned out. (He's also huge, though. I don't know where he's going!) I also mostly finished up HG Blue Frame 2nd, who I started earlier in the year and stalled out on. I've misplaced her markings, however. I know they'll turn up, so she can just go on the shelf as-is for now.
So far for the nerd convention, I've dug out some Transformers and some Monster High dolls. Need to match up accessories and cards and whatnot for them if I can. I just have way too many bins of this stuff. It'll be good to downsize... (Hopefully 2026 can be the year of doing a few more shows and getting rid of a few more things?)
2025 week 46
Nov. 17th, 2025 09:13 amthis week's hand update is that the doctor wants me to get a MRI of my hand before we proceed to surgery. cool, that's a reasonable idea since the treatment hasn't worked— oh i can't get a MRI until mid-december. great. love this for me.
so much for getting better before the new year... at this rate i doubt i'll be able to raid the next tier in ff14, at least not in the initial weeks. i'm disappointed about it, but so it goes.
i still have 66,000 grade 3 materials to collect from the diadem, but naturally i've been overdoing that too and now my wrist hurts. thankfully this feels like just normal inflammation, but it means i'm back icing my hand every few hours and cutting back on any strenuous activity. apparently even the diadem is strenuous. baffling to think that my body is giving out on this before my mind (the diadem is a very boring activity in final fantasy xiv).
the only other news is that i've been reading the devoured worlds trilogy by megan e. o'keefe, which has really interesting sci fi concepts and a great enemies to lovers storyline... but fumbles the overarching mystery in a way that erases agency for a number of characters. i really loved the first book until i got to that twist, and now i'm just like, ah fuck, we could have had it all. i'm continuing on with the second book regardless because the concepts are enough to keep me going, but i would have liked the central mystery to be something else.
i'm up to 26 of 40 books for the year though, so we're trundling along. in a weird way, not being able to hit this goal is motivating me more to get as close as i can to the finish line. admittedly the inability to play video games is driving a lot of my free time into reading, but it's very easy to spend that time on mindless scrolling and i'm glad i've not been doing as much of that.
