Title: Salve
Fandom: Final Fantasy 4
Characters: Edward/Cecil
Rating: PGish
Length: ~4.6k words
Summary: After a resounding defeat in Fabul, Cecil learns a little about what to fend off -- and what to let past his guard.
Notes: This is actually a rewrite of a story I wrote like...probably 15 years ago at this point, if not more. Horrifying thought. I was curious to see what would happen, and the result was that it's five times as long and has a lot more blood in it, which...#WritingJourney, I guess. It's still extraordinarily sappy, to a degree that is probably embarassing, but hopefully I've proven my edgelord credentials enough that I am allowed this indulgence. Wound bandaging, a bit of extra blood on top of that (look, Darkness does HP damage, what do you want from me), angst with a mostly hopeful ending, bed sharing, indulgent amounts of headcanons about game mechanics.

A knock on the door was the last thing Cecil wanted to hear at the moment )

Title: Amphisbaena
Fandom: Final Fantasy 4
Characters: Baigan. Appearances by Golbez, Scarmiglione, Cagnazzo, Kain
Rating: Mature
Length: ~6.6k words
Summary: Being a monster outside as well as inside has its ups and downs.
Notes: Hoo boy. Of all the fics nobody asked for, I think this is the least asked-for of all time. The story actually spun off a different fic that didn't work out (probably for the best given that it was kind of vile even for me) because I couldn't deal with Baigan's stupid snake arms. They suck so bad. In the game he's all like "Golbez has given me a great gift" and I am here to tell you: no he did not. Anyway, this has lots of extremely graphic gore and violence, body horror, non-explicitly-described rape; I hesitate to give this the guro tag given I don't think the gore in this is particularly eroticized, its mostly just gross.

The quote at the beginning is from Lucan's Pharsalia, a Latin epic poem about the conflict between Pompey and Caesar that knocked me on my ass when I read it in school and quickly became my favorite because it has some truly gnarly stuff in it. There's a lengthy sequence near the end consisting of Roman soldiers dying in graphic, horrifying detail to a variety of different deadly snakes, which in all honestly was probably the primary inspiration for this fic.

At least a blatant seditious act would have given Baigan an excuse to break the Lord Commander's nose. )

Fandom: Final Fantasy 4
Characters: Edward/Anna (though, like...just look at the notes I guess)
Rating: PG-13
Length: ~1.2k words
Notes: I really don't know how to rate this -- it's terribly graphic or anything, it's just kind of a huge downer. I mean it's primarily Edward carrying Anna's body around. Death, grief, brief thoughts of suicide, aftermath of violence.

Prompt: last kiss )
ghoulmouse: (Default)
Fandom: Final Fantasy 4
Characters: Edward/Edge
Rating: Everyone
Length: ~600 words
Notes: More Kiss Battle stuff, just silly and cute. This has the distinction of being the first thing in a while that I have 1) composed entirely inside a website text box and 2) lost the first version of due to this. Sigh. Also, I watched my friend play the Namingway Edition ROM hack of FF4 right before writing this, and there's a bit that stood out to me in that translation where they have Edward say "Assuredly so" instead of just like..."Yes", I suppose. In retrospect it's very funny to see how much that single line seems to have influenced how I write Edward's dialog.

Prompt: full of surprises )

Ok so I guess Youtube is on fire because a whole bunch of big video essayists got exposed for some pretty extreme plagiarism (among other things, it's a whole deal).

So I wanted to post some video essays that I think are actually really good!

These are all about video games because 1) I like video games and 2) I think gaming YouTube is an extremely dire space full of opinions and people that are at best annoying so I think it's cool to highlight the non-terrible parts.

Without futher complaining:

[There will probably be spoliers for various games in these videos, don't say I didn't warn you.]

Clickbait Title (Number 5 Will Shock You!) )

If any of these turn out to be plagiarized also, I'm sorry.

Finished my Four Job Fiesta run. I got to Exdeath at level 30, which is on the low side (having access to !Flee will do that to you), so I ended up grinding a little even though I hate to do that. Feels like an admission of defeat (I have beaten Exdeath at even lower levels then that in the past!). I grinded (ground???) up to 40 which I think was probably unnecessary -- a couple of levels makes a huge difference in FFV, and I absolutely chewed through the final battle in one go at level 40 with !Zeninage, the Chicken Knife + !Mug, the Magic Lamp, and a Beastmaster with a captured Rukh and an Air Knife (releasing the monster casts Breath Wing, which deals damage based on the target's HP and is Wind element, easily deals 9999 to every part of Neo Exdeath).

Something about throwing money at Exdeath until he dies is really funny.

Between 4JF and Octopath Traveler I've been thinking a whole lot about turnbased RPG design.

In other fandom news, Suruga-ya.com had a day of free shipping including international, so I grabbed a bunch of old FFIV stuff -- 3 guidebooks released along with the original game and Vol 1 of the 2008 light novel. My Japanese isn't great but I just so happen to be friends with a handful of pro translators so I might enlist their help to go through the book a bit and post anything interesting. The setting guidebook has a translation online but there isn't one of the light novel, to my knowledge. It's got some very interesing unique art as well -- a scene of Edward and Anna's wedding (?!) for example. The guidebooks have a lot of cute hand-drawn pictures of enemy formations, key art of different items, and of course the setting info that tells you wild shit like "Edward's family invented money" and "everyone born in Troia is female" and "there are only 100 Eblanese people left in the entire world". Also, the absolute shittiest reproductions of pixel art that the early 90s could possibly have served up in an official published book.

Wondering if I should make a mid-2000s-style Character Shrine so I can compare all the different official renderings of Edward, I don't think he's been depicted wearing the same outfit twice. Sometimes he's wearing a different outfit depending upon which menu you're looking at within the same game.

Also got the anniversary Song of Saya light novel, which is mostly just a piece of Fandom Merch rather than a source of unique canon stuff (the text seems to be pretty similar to the VN, from what I can read of the book and recall of the game's specifics, with only a couple illustrations). But, nice to have.

And I just realized I have never posted pet pics on DW, and I firmly believe everyone should look at him, so here's some pictures of my lionhead rabbit Pazuzu:

He was named after the demon in The Exorcist. For good reason, rabbits are inherently evil entities and he is an absolute monster (cute tho).

It's like, hard for me to post off-hand prompt fills or drabbles or what-have-you, even though I used to do it all the time. It just feels so...LAME, you know? Especially drabbles, it's like...this is such a nothingburger of a post, why am I insisting people look at this.

I backed off AO3 in favor of reviving my DW posting in hopes that it would help me break the stalemate I've currently got going with all my thousands of WIPs by encouraging me to write more casually. That is proving way more of a hurdle than I expected.

Look, if I'm going to post it, it's gotta be Perfect. Especially if it's some small fandom or rarepair, like as though the responsibility falls solely on me to produce the Definitive Work in this area, which is a lot of very stupid pressure to put oneself under.

But, I knocked out a couple drabbles and I think it actually helped me make some progress on this summoner Edward AU longfic that has been rattling around in my brain for...I think literally a decade, but abruptly resurfaced due to FFXIV kindly adding a dungeon called "Fell Court of Troia" featuring Scarmiglione. I actually posted a version of part of this...probably over a decade ago at this point. It's gotten significantly more insane in the intervening time, to the extent that I almost HAVE to write it because without the context of the whole AU, talking about any individual idea or plot point or whatever makes me sound like a crazy person.

I literally never let go of ideas, apparently.

I've been so out of the loop on...everything because that cosplay and con rush consumed my life. I'm playing the Crooked Man, though, and really enjoying it. I could honestly play RPGMaker games for the rest of eternity, idk.

Time to get back to my roots and post some meta putting some minor detail of a video game under absurd scrutiny.

So I was thinking about FF4's hovercraft )

Playing through FF4DS Lunar Subteranne and I got killed by this stupid monster-in-a-box red dragon with heat lasers SO many times. Way harder than Bahamut (whom I killed in one go) and Dark Bahamut (which took me 2 tries). I didn't count how many times I died but I would not be surprised if it took me less time to beat Zeromus when I get there.

Cecil had better be appreciative of how hard I worked to get him those sparkly crystal gloves. (Someone watching me play commented that Cecil probably looks like a magical girl by the time you get to Zeromus fully outfited in crystal armor and a glittering holy sword, which...you know, that rules actually.)

Also it's really funny that Cecil (in this version at least) can equip Kain's top-tier armor set but Kain can't equip Cecil's. I feel like that would make Kain mad.

The menu thought bubbles continue to be the best addition to this game or possibly any game ever, and I love that throughout the game it makes it 100% clear that Edge has no fucking clue what is happening at any given moment lol. He almost loses his nerve in the final dungeon, too, which makes him a lot more endearing to me. It's such a small, simple addition and it adds SO much. I also thought Kain being like "Cecil, if you can forgive me, you should forgive him as well" (about Golbez) was...interesting. Kinda shines a new light on Kain's relationship to Golbez which doesn't really get fleshed out in much detail in the original.

Speaking of Golbez I drank a lot of wine last night and decided to blind prog Golbez EX in FFXIV, which was fun. I was like "man I haven't watched a guide but I HAVE read a lot of erotic fanfic about a guy with the same name and hat" but, there was not a phase where Golbez puts like a [Mindfuck] debuff on a random melee DPS, unfortunately. No [Sexual Tension] tethers or...idk that mechanic in Hades where he puts you in a little cage that deals damage until someone breaks you out, that one would be in theme here. That one's definitely on my list of sexiest raid mechanics (yes I have a list).

We got about halfway through the fight, which I think is pretty good when one of the healers is trashed and doesn't know what's happening.

Title: Diving Under
Fandom: Final Fantasy 4
Characters: Rydia/Leviathan
Rating: Explicit
Length: ~2k words
Summary: Rydia has no use for human things, especially human desires.
Notes: Written for a round of Porn Battle (RIP) and it got kinda weird, although I don't know where else a sex scene betwen a human and a giant sea serpent would go. Sort of soft-vore-adjacent, with fearplay and Rydia as a definite monsterfucker, because she would be.

A great many monsters, she knew, harbored a desire to sport with mortals. )

Title: Combustion, Ignition
Fandom: Final Fantasy IV
Characters: Dr. Lugae/Rubicante, appearance by Golbez
Rating: Mature
Length: ~3.5k
Summary: Science abhors a mystery, and there was nothing more mysterious than the Archfiend of Fire.
Notes: I really wish I could take credit for this idea but I think it was written off someone else's prompt. It's just such a good thought, though, and I'm glad I got to run with it. Features some mad science flavored torture/violence, oblique sexual references, and a lot of worldbuilding.

Of all things Lugae hated -- a long and storied list of things that encompassed, at times, all of heaven and earth and the nations of man in between... )
