Fandom: Final Fantasy 4
Characters: Edward/Edge
Rating: Everyone
Length: ~600 words
Notes: More Kiss Battle stuff, just silly and cute. This has the distinction of being the first thing in a while that I have 1) composed entirely inside a website text box and 2) lost the first version of due to this. Sigh. Also, I watched my friend play the Namingway Edition ROM hack of FF4 right before writing this, and there's a bit that stood out to me in that translation where they have Edward say "Assuredly so" instead of just like..."Yes", I suppose. In retrospect it's very funny to see how much that single line seems to have influenced how I write Edward's dialog.

Edward, his cheeks beet red where they could be seen between his fingers, definitely had the look of someone worried he might have just sparked an international incident. After all, this was technically a diplomatic function, and they were both technically supposed to be here in official capacity, something both of them had rather forgotten in the past half hour or so. Well, if they REALLY wanted to people to behave at these things, they should cut out all the good food and the wine and the music, tell everyone NOT to come dressed up in their fanciest outfits, and probably close off all these little side parlors that were just begging for somebody to duck into them for a private conversation. This one even had one of those velvet couches in it, the kind that didn’t have arms on one side so you could fall onto it. Crazy.

“Sorry,” Edward mumbled. “Perhaps I misconstrued the intent of your question.”

Edge waved his hand. “You just surprised me, is all. Didn’t take you for the forward type.”

“Also, I…didn't realize you’d never…”

Edge narrowed his eyes. “Never what?”

“Kissed anyone before.”

“You can just TELL that?“ Edge blurted out, before his brain caught up to his mouth and tackled that line of conversation to the ground. “I mean, you’re wrong though.”

“Of course.”

“I’ve kissed TONS of girls.”

“Naturally.”

“I only asked you for advice about it because I just can’t rest on my laurels. Always gotta strive for more, you know?”

Edge looked over at Edward; it was hard to tell if he was buying any of this, but if he wasn’t, he was way too polite to say anything, which was almost as good. He was still blushing furiously, but he had finally stopped hiding behind his hands.

“Well, I suppose…that is something of a relief,” Edward said. “I would hate for you to have such a clumsy introduction to the matter.” For a moment Edge was certain Edward HAD to be making fun of him, but no — Edward just always talked like that, even in private apparently. It was really funny and, Edge begrudgingly admitted to himself, actually kinda cute.

“Yeah, that would’ve been real embarrassing,” Edge said, reaching up to fix his hair, suddenly concerned he might look TOO disheveled. “For you, I mean. Lucky thing you’re so good at kissing, I guess.”

“I’m flattered,” Edward said, the hint of a very sheepish smile starting to creep onto his face. “Given your breadth of experience in the topic.” It was impossible to tell if Edward was humoring him or joking or what — he just sounded so SINCERE all the time. Maybe that was the trick that made him so appealing to girls.

Even though Edward had never actually answered Edge’s question about romance, Edge couldn’t help but feel like he was on the verge of some kind of revelation anyway, one that just needed a little more investigation before it really hit him.

Edward had retreated a good distance, so Edge reached out and grabbed him by some ruffly part of his evening wear that seemed tailor made for this exact purpose. “Yeah, so… it’s no big deal if you show me again.” Pulling Edward close, Edge noticed, gave him something to do with his hands, which was something he’d previously been a little perplexed about. He was already picking things up. “And maybe we can, you know. Take our time. Go over the details.”

As Edward nodded and their lips met, Edge reflected that he’d never seen someone bounce back from embarrassment quite that fast. Maybe that was some kind of resilience that he ought to observe and learn about too, Edge thought…or maybe Edward was just that eager to get back to the kissing. Maybe Edge had discovered he had a wellspring of natural talent.

Yeah…that was probably it.

It did stand out to me as different, but I liked it nevertheless!
